Description
Dr. Fernão de Ornelas Street, approximately 200 meters long, is a landmark of modernist urbanism in Funchal, and will remain the main commercial artery of Funchal in 2026, connecting Largo do Phelps to Mercado dos Lavradores.
Its name honors the person responsible for the urban modernization of the city between 1935 and 1946, a period in which fundamental infrastructures such as the water and sewage network, the Market itself, and the Slaughterhouse were designed. Currently, the street is a dynamic pedestrian area, characterized by traditional commerce and mid-20th-century architecture.
